Recently, we received a question through our web site asking what the difference was between Effer-K and Klor-Con. We thought this was worth clarifying via our blog.
Effer-K is potassium citrate in the form of an effervescent tablet. You can add Effer-K to water or a beverage of choice, the tablet effervesces into the liquid, and you drink your dosage of potassium.
Klor-Con is potassium chloride. It is in the form of an extended release tablet. The reason why it is designed to be extended release is so that concentrated doses of potassium are not released in gastrointestinal track (which can cause irritation, ulcers, etc…)
Klor-Con also makes a powdered form of potassium chloride that can be added to a beverage of choice, however because it is KCl, the taste is unpalatable, and difficult for some to ingest.
Both products replenish a patient’s potassium. Studies have shown that taking potassium in the form of potassium citrate is just as effective as taking potassium in the form of potassium chloride.
