We received an email a couple of weeks ago from a patient wanting to try Effer-K. Apparently the cost of his potassium tablets recently skyrocketed so he was looking for another solution. Here’s what he wrote.
3 months ago for 90 tabs of Klor-Con 10 mEq cost me $26.00. Last week the same script cost was $102.00 this was pretty much the same price at 2 other places I checked. I pay out of pocket, no insurance.
Holy smokes! So we did a little checking on our own. We found prices varying between $40 – $100 for 90 tabs.
When we have priced Effer-K at the pharmacies we have found the cash price to be between $17-$22/month. So in some cases Effer-K can be less expensive then the KCl (horse pills) tablets and capsules.
What surprised us most when doing this research is that most pharmacists did not know there was an effervescent potassium citrate in a 10 or 20 mEq strength….ummm… hello??? Heard of Effer-K? What are they telling patients that can’t swallow those tablets and capsules?
